Siemens Process Instrumentation Assists Large Bulk Chemical Manufacturer with Controlling Ethane Cracker Performance

Customer

The customer was a large, tier 1 bulk chemical manufacturer who has numerous sites across the US. They had been a sporadic user of Siemens clamp-on flowmeters and pressure transmitters at two of their site, but nothing significant.

Application
Company makes plastic resin as a fine powder used in numerous products such as PVC windows, paint, car dash boards, etc. They are currently in the middle of an aggressive expansion plan to add additional ethane cracking capacity, which is expected to run through 2020. For this application, the P500 and DSIII pressure and TF temperature transmitters were installed on separate ethane furnaces used to break down ethane into smaller molecules. The process conditions inside the furnace need to be carefully controlled in order to ensure proper extraction of methane, ethane, ethylene, propane, propylene, butane and butenes used as feedstock for their final products. Process temperatures in the application are approximately 1,500 Deg F.

Solution
Siemens worked closely with Corporate & Plant engineers over the course of multiple months. Based on a deep understanding of the application requirements and the close relationships with purchasing and engineering personnel developed, Siemens was chosen to supply all pressure and temperature instrumentation for the project. A key feature in the selection of Siemens transmitters was advanced diagnostics and high accuracy measurement of the Siemens instruments. For the project, Siemens supplied (27) P500 Pressure Transmitters, (73) DSIII Pressure Transmitters, and (93) TF Temperature Transmitters.
