Siemens External “Digital Sensor Link” (DSL) for Sitrans FST030 Ultrasonic Flow System

March 2021, MARIETTA, GA ~ Siemens is proud to announce the latest in the series of feature updates and performance improvements for the Sitrans FS230, Siemens' premium line of clamp-on ultrasonic flow systems. The external “Digital Sensor Link” (DSL) is an external digital module for the Sitrans FST030 flow transmitter installed near the measurement pipe. The DSL processes analog signals from the sensors and immediately digitizes the measured values into flow data, which is sent to the transmitter via a “Siemens Sensor Link” (SSL) cable for further processing. The external DSL module is an alternative to the built-in internal DSL previously standard in the FST030 transmitter. There are two variants of the DSL, one configured for liquid fluid flow and the other for gas flow.

The external DSL provides additional flexibility and an extended range of functions:

  • 100 Hz digital high-speed interface between the transmitter and DSL

  • Measurement of 1 to 4 independent measurement paths (on a single pipe)

  • 2 analog inputs for temperature or current measurement near the pipe

  • External DSL and sensors come with FM Class 1 Div. 1 approval; wall-mount transmitter is installed in FM Class 1 Div. 2 environments

  • IP66/68 protection against dust and water intrusion

  • Up to 500 ft between the DSL and transmitter possible with SSL cable

  • Short analog sensor cables from on-pipe sensors, providing optimal RF interference suppression.

  • Cable cost savings for longer cable runs, as only a single cable is required for the full run instead of 2 to 8 separate cables from each sensor
