Revolutionizing Silo Level Measurement: FLW Southeast Success Story with Siemens LR560 Technology

August 2023, MARIETTA, GA ~

The client, a prominent float glass manufacturer in North Carolina, is equipped with multiple silos for storing essential raw materials including sand, soda ash, dolomite, limestone, saltcake, and broken glass fragments (cullet). The client was experiencing issues with reliable level measurement that they could depend on for process decisions. The client’s level scheme utilized PCS 7 DCS with YOYO type contact level instruments that worked by lowering a weight down to the surface of the material and making a measurement when the instrument observed slack in the cable.

This contact-based measuring approach caused frequent maintenance issues, causing frustration for management and maintenance personnel, who expended substantial time monthly on upkeep. Consequently, the objective was to replace this system with non-contact technology that could offer real-time level data to the DCS (Distributed Control System) while being low-maintenance.

FLW Southeast's local sales engineer introduced the Siemens LR560 radar level as a potential solution, and in collaboration with FLW Southeast's service team, it was installed and tested on a challenging material – cullet, which consists of fragmented glass pieces. An initial concern was whether the glass's reflective properties would interfere with the radar sensor's return signal, but these fears were allayed as the LR560 performed exceptionally well. Encouraged by this outcome, the LR560 was further tested on each raw material silo at the plant. Each raw material underwent a week-long trial, during which the Siemens technology consistently delivered outstanding performance. Consequently, the decision was made to replace the problematicYOYO sensors across all silos with Siemens LR560 radar transmitters.

Fast forward two years, and the client remains highly satisfied with the LR560's performance, enthusiastically endorsing the technology and FLW Southeast.
